Just as in any city, taking public transport in Paris can seem like a great challenge when you first arrive. However, the system is well-organized and logical and a great way to explore the French capital. The following is a quick guide to getting around town on the various transport options available.
The Paris Métropolitain (Métro)
Some of the oldest parts of the underground transport system in Paris date back as far as 1900. There are sixteen lines, each numbered and color-coded, and 300 stations, so you will never be far from a Métro stop when in Paris. The system runs underground for the most part, but large sections of lines 2 and 6 are outdoors and offer great views of famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Sacré Coeur at Montmartre.
Line 14 of the Métro is fully automated, so you can get a train driver's view up front as you hurtle through the tunnels and around the bends. The line also has the advantage of running even when there is a strike (and strike days are not uncommon in French public transport).
