Emo Transport

There are substances in the materials world that are green in colour, namely minerals, metallic ores and alloys, chemical compounds and paints. However, the present title is a metaphor. It refers to materials (metals, plastics or composites) and their processing routes that are environmentally i.e. ecologically, (eco-) friendly and resource efficient throughout their life cycle.

Our growing awareness of issues on environmental protection is gaining increasing importance in everyday life in the field of materials science and engineering. A comprehensive review of the various features of green materials strategy is presented (1-12). Any socio-economic and legislative issues are not discussed.

Basic considerations

  • Carbon footprint

All materials have an embodied energy (the energy to create them) and a carbon footprint (carbon dioxide gas released during their creation). Almost every activity of our daily life such as transportation, manufacture or anything using electricity generates a carbon footprint arising from burning a fossil fuel (coal, oil or gas) to produce energy, and releasing green house gas carbon dioxide as a by-product that makes the planet hotter. One of the aims of green materials strategy is to minimize carbon footprint.
