Cole Express Company operated in Maine and the Northeastern United States for over 50 years. Galen Cole, company president, coordinated gathering and exhibiting many examples of transportation at the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor, Maine.
The Cole Family History
Allie Cole founded the transportation company in 1917 after he had worked at a variety of jobs to support his widowed mother and his siblings. He began trucking mail to points within Maine and expanded as opportunities presented themselves. He took lumbermen to their seasonal jobs, plowed roads, and brought lumber to the railroads.
From a humble beginning, the company grew and Allie’s sons entered the business. Cole Express expanded through the years with ups and downs as the economy changed. With the Second World War, Cole received government contracts to bring supplies to air bases.
