It was announced on 6July 2005 that London’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games had been successful. The Olympic Games take place from 27 July to 12 August and the Paralympic Games from 29 August to 9 September. 26 sports will be represented at the Olympics and 20 at the Paralympics, many of these breaking down into a range of disciplines and events.
The London Olympics Leading Up To 2012
The four-year London 2012 Cultural Olympiad started in September 2008. It aims to inspire creativity across all forms of culture, especially among young people. The Cultural Olympiad will culminate with a UK-wide festival in 2012, bringing together leading artists from all over the world. It is hoped that its legacy will last well beyond 2012.
Already there are 18 Live Sites in public places throughout England, Wales and Scotland. These are huge screens and event spaces situated in urban centres offering live information, video, news and community events. It will be possible to watch the events at the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012 from these venues.
