London Underground Transport

An exhibition at the London Transport Museum looks at how the transport systems of three very different cities copied during the bombing campaigns of the Second World war.

Under Attack – London, Coventry and Dresden is a joint collaboration between the Verkehrsmuseum, Dresden, and Coventry Transport Museum, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Dresden bombing, and the 70th anniversary of the start of the London Blitz.

The exhibition features wartime transport posters and works by well-known artists including Tom Eckersley, Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird), Robert Sargent Austin, Edward McKnight Kauffer, Eric Kennington, Walter E Spradbery, Fred Taylor, Anna Zinkeisen and many unnamed artists.

Under Attack – London, Coventry and Dresden – About the Exhibition

The exhibition looks at World War II from the perspective of the public transport systems of London, Coventry and Dresden, showing how public transport helped create a feeling of normality.

The display shows each city's preparations for war. For example, in both London and Coventry, the public transport system played a vital part in the evacuation of children and vulnerable adults to safer parts of England. But in Dresden, the reverse happened: public transport brought people to the city centre, which was itself regarded as a shelter. In both cases, the transport systems were essential in keeping the cities moving and helping raise public morale.
