The Australian system of government consists of three parts, local, state and Commonwealth, also known as Federal. Each section has its own responsibilities and procedures.
Local Government
Local Government is in the form of council areas which include several suburbs. For instance the City of Sydney Council covers the areas of Glebe, Sydney City, Newtown, Camperdown, Redfern and Waterloo. The local council is responsible for garbage collection, provides community services such as libraries and maintains parks and gardens.
Each council is divided into wards from which residents elect one or more representatives.These representatives meet as a council to decide expenditure and policy procedures. Each state has its own rules for local council elections. In New South Wales, local council elections are held every four years.
