The Facebook page reads “Dubuque Police Department” and the contents give information for getting in touch with Mark Dalsing, Dubuque Iowa’s Chief of Police. There are 21 pictures: pictures of the hand guns the department uses, bank robbery and shooting scenes, police officers and a photo of a car accident that one FB viewer liked. As of today, 130 people have pressed a key on their computers announcing they like the Dubuque Police Department Facebook page.

Dubuque Police Not Engaged In Social Media

September 8th, 2010, the City of Dubuque web site contained the following message:

The Dubuque Police would like to inform citizens that the department does not currently have or maintain an official Facebook page and does not engage in any other form of social media via the Internet at this time.

The only official DPD representation on the Internet is at the City of Dubuque’s website: www.cityofdubuque.org. Residents should be aware that while certain websites or social media pages/postings may look official, they should not assume the content of said Internet sites is accurate or legitimate.

False Facebook Pages

Can a person really set up a page on Facebook representing something as big as a police department? Is that legal? In Facebook’s statement of rights and responsibilities they have the following listed under Safety: "You will not use Facebook to do anything unlawful, misleading, malicious, or discriminatory."
