The sliver-sized country of Israel has had an out-sized high-technology sector for the past two decades, along with a historical tradition of greening the desert with tree-planting programs, agrarian kibbutzes, and, more recently, organic farms and vineyards.
Environmentalism and technology come together at Better Place, a company in Tel Aviv that is developing battery technology and infrastructure for eco-friendly electric cars. Pilot programs have already been successfully tested in Israel, and a taxi program was tested in Japan. A new program will be tested between San Francisco and San Jose, California starting in 2012. By the end of 2011, the first consumer-ready electric Renaults are scheduled to hit Israeli roads.
