Sustainable cities need to utilize all the opportunities that are available at their disposal when it comes to transitioning their transportation systems to ones that are more in balance with the natural systems in the region. A number of low cost choices can be made available for a city such as Duluth, Minnesota. When looking at the different options available, the city would need to take several things into consideration.

First, the city will need a system that doesn’t rely completely on current fossil fuel usage. Second, the city officials will need to implement a system of transportation that is on one hand environmentally friendly and on the other one that is viable and efficient. Finally, the city will need one that encourages denser population. One such opportunity would be a bike rental system similar to the ones utilized in cities such as Paris or Washington D.C.

In the near future cities will be faced with a variety of problems to their transportation networks as the price of fossil fuels increases exponentially. Starting over the next century the rising price of oil and gas will make it unfeasible to drive vehicles the way that our country does now. This effect coupled with the damage currently being done to our atmosphere can dangerously affect our way of life and the environment that we are at the mercy of.
