The major internal upgrades at Watertown's facility at 860 West St. include the installation of new equipment. The new equipment is for shrink wrapping of pallets of the products produced at the plant.
The upgrades will be operational by the end of the year.
The Watertown facility, constructed in 1969 and operational in 1970, began with one can filling line in its 64,000-square-foot facility. There have been seven expansions at the firm over the years, including 1977, 1980, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1991 and 1996.
The current facility has 413,000 square feet and produces in excess of 30 million cases of liquid refreshments annually.
In 2004, Wis-Pak formed a majority-owned subsidiary, WP Beverages, LLC, to purchase franchise operations. Currently those include Pepsi-Cola of Madison, Pepsi-Cola of Rockford and Pepsi-Cola of Iron Mountain.
“The 2004 franchise purchase was a unique transaction approved by the Pepsi-Cola Company, which provides Wis-Pak the opportunity to not only produce but also distribute the products to our many loyal customers,” according to Barbara Parish, president of Wis-Pak.
WP Beverages, LLC, is constructing a new distribution facility in Hermansville. The new 48,000-square-foot distribution center, scheduled for completion in November, will house all administrative, sales and operations activities for its Pepsi-Cola of Iron Mountain franchise area. The area includes Schoolcraft, Dickinson, Delta, Iron and Menominee counties in Michigan as well as Florence County and part of Marinette County in Wisconsin.
Ground has already been broken for the new facility. According to Parish, “After careful analysis of the franchise geography and distribution system, Hermansville, Mich., was selected due to its central location with access to both Iron Mountain and Escanaba.”
Pepsi-Cola of Iron Mountain, formerly Peninsula Beverages, was purchased by WP Beverages, a division of Wis-Pak, Inc., in 2006. The franchise employs 52 people.
Today, Wis-Pak is widely recognized as one of the most successful cooperative companies in the soft drink industry. Its shareholders represent 51 Pepsi-Cola franchises across the central U.S. This territory was recently expanded to include parts of Tennessee, Alabama and northern Florida.
Pepsi-Cola is still the company's No. 1 product line.
Wis-Pak's other wholly owned subsidiaries include soft drink manufacturing facilities in La Crosse, in Mankato, Minn., in Norfolk, Neb., in Quincy, Ill., and in Dyersburg, Tenn. Additional subsidiaries include Klarbrunn, a bottled water company; Wis-Pak Express, a transportation company; and a company for centralized administration.
Wis-Pak and its subsidiaries currently employ approximately 1,000 people.
